Vasil
Troyanov Boyanov, better known as Azis, is a Bulgarian pop-folk
(chalga) singer of Romani ethnicity. He was born on 7 March 1978.
in Sliven but grew up in Kostinbrod and Sofia in a well-to-do family.
At the age of 11, he moved to Germany, where he walked wealthy people's
dogs and learned the language. He then attempted to become a model,
but in vain. He met Luliana Kuncheva through a modeling agency and
they become best friends.
He is known for, among other things, his atypical
gender expression. Azis has caused some controversy in Bulgaria
with his flamboyant persona and his campaigning on behalf of the
somewhat downtrodden Roma (Gypsy) minority. He is one of the most
famous people in Bulgaria.
One
of his first appearances as a musician was in the "Roma"
ensemble. The producer of Sunny Music Krum Krumov noticed him and
Vasil made his first album with Krumov's help. His first album consisted
of gospel songs, and was total crap in Vasil's opinion. He became
more famous with his second album (and with the fact he became a
gay and started with pervert clips in dresses), "Even Men Cry,"
and has released over ten albums to date.
As an entertainer he has recorded and performed many
popular and traditional songs. His discography includes: "Celuvai
Me" (2003), "Na Golo" (2003), "Kraliat"
(2004), "Together" with Desislava (2004), "2005"
(2005) and "Diva" (2006). His recordings also feature
guest chalga stars.
He began his political carrer in 2005 as a member
of the Euroroma political party and ran in the general elections
campaign in the summer of 2005, but didn't receive enough votes
to become a member of Parliament.
He
also performed alongside Mariana Popova in the Semi-Final of the
Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with the song Let Me Cry.
In 2006. he was also elected on the list of 100 greatest Bulgarian
of all time, as the 21st. (See Official site Velikite
Balgari... and Azis
position on his list...)
His book named "I, Azis" published in Bulgaria
in 2006.
Azis
became the father of a baby girl, named Raya, August 5 and he was
the biological father of the baby. The babys mother, Gala,
has been a friend of Azis since his youth. Azis told that the child
was going to live in normal circumstances and he was going to prove
that he could be a father. Azis and his partner, Niki Kitaetsa,
staged an unofficial wedding in Sofia in October 2006.
